Vesakha Puja 2016
This year’s Vesakh celebration on May 29th in commemoration of the birth, complete awakening and Parinibbana of the Buddha took again place within the Kipferhaus in Hinterkappelen near Bern.
For this event we had invited Ajahn Mettiko from Muttodaya Monastery in Germany to offer some Dhamma reflections. His formal Dhamma talk was held in the Thai language and much appreciated by our Thai community. Afterwards the more informal reflections by all the monks were also shared in other languages.
We were also very happy, that Ashin Ottama was our guest not only for the celebration, but also as a guest in Dhammapala for a few days. He had been a Dhammapala resident off and on from 1996 until 2010, when he finally moved to Santacittarama Monastery in Italy, where he still resides today.
The formal procedures of the day were initiated by His Excellency the Thai Ambassador, who first gave a short welcome address to the whole assembly and then lit the candles and incense to start the procedings. The festive highlight of the day consisted in an indoor circumambulation of a Buddha shrine within the Kipferhaus, during which all participants brought deeply to mind and heart the significance of the triple gem for their lives.
Finally it should also be noted, that the many friends of the monastery demonstrated wonderful generosity during this day, not only with mountains of foodstuff, but also with a substantial monetary donation. This traditional form of crowdfunding is especially welcome this year, as the monastery has to pay major expenses towards its roof renovation project.
